Abstract

This article reconstructs the trajectory of brothers Edmond (1822-1896) and Jules (1830-1870) de Goncourt, including the years of preparation of their first works, their effective entry into the French literary field and the production of Edmond without the collaboration of his brother, who died in 1870. Taking as a basis the Sociology of literature and the History of book and publishing, we first observe the artistic inclinations and the successive bets of the Goncourt brothers on different themes and literary genres. This allows us to subsequently describe and analyze their choice of publishers for the publication of their works. Starting from the presentation of the conditions of production of the Goncourt brothers’ work in the French literary field, the establishment of their names in a position of relative recognition and prestige is discussed.
