Abstract

This paper discusses the archive as textual artifice in “The Aspern Papers” (1888) by Henry James. More than a source of knowledge capable of ensuring the accuracy of facts, the archive is rather an inventive resource which, through a first-person account by an anonymous editor, gives rise to fabulations that draw the reader into an interpretative game. Amid the agitation of modern Venice, the multitude of impressions that overwhelms the narrator reveals itself as a device which sheds light on the text as creation. Turned into an object of fiction, personal manuscripts, as exemplified by James’s own records, are therefore fertile soil for imaginative activity.
